Review of Whiteout (2009) by Korry S — 13 Jun 2015
A first-rate story, told at a rational pace rather than at the breakneck speed Hollywood prefers to use, to keep you from noticing the plot holes.
The hero is a U.S. Marshal who volunteered for one of the worst postings a Marshal can be given, as the sole law enforcement officer for the entire American population of Antarctica.
The real star of the story, though, is the unearthly environment of the Antarctic, the closest you can get to being on another planet for under a billion dollars. The main action takes place as the summer crew are preparing to leave before the Antarctic winter sets in. Over and over we are reminded that it is an environment we did not evolve for, and which we are still learning how to live in.
This film is an excellent adaptation of Greg Rucka's graphic novel (which I also recommend). I look forward to the next Greg Rucka film adaptation, perhaps his "Queen and Country" series.
