Review of White Zombie (1932) by Geir F — 01 Apr 2008
Fantastic film with one of Bela Lugosi's most iconic performances. The haunting melody that is chanted at the beginning of the film effectively sets up the tone and atmosphere of the film that is to follow.
While it isn't "action-packed" by any means, I found the zombies in this film to be extremely unsettling to watch, not because they are gruesome in any way, but because they are particularly NOT-gruesome.
These aren't the flesh-eaters we've come to know in Hollywood cinema after George Romero's iconic Night of the Living Dead. Instead, these zombies are more like empty shells of people, who are completely in control of the malicious Lugosi with his crazy, wild-eyed stare.
A must-see for anyone who calls themselves a fan of zombie-cinema. This is where it all began.
