Review of White Zombie (1932) by Richard G — 24 Aug 2009
White Zombie, considered by many to be the first actual zombie film. And after nearly 80 years, it is still influencing many filmakers. It doesn't hold up to modern zombie films by way of gore, special effects, and intensity.
But what it does have is a really good storyline. In the 30รข??s, Zombies were looked at as a curse, as opposed to most movies nowadays, where zombification is usually a virus or mutation. And when there is a curse, there is usually someone in control.
And thus enters our antagonist. A man who controls people with a voodoo curse to operate his business, who is enlisted to help him win over a woman, but what other mysteries does master Legendre (Bela Lugosi) hide? An absolute must see for any fan of Zombie films.
