Review of White on Rice (2009) by Thomas W — 20 Oct 2010
"Jimmy" is a 40 year old, divorced Japanese guy living with his sister and tough-ass brother-in-law, in America. He is mentally a little off, doesn't have a career, and is completely childish in every way. Coming to America, he hopes to find a girl, someone completely different from his ex-wife. But his personality is his biggest problem....
Hiroshi Watanabe is possible the new Tora-San, not intelligent, selfish, careless, and jobless. Director Dave Boyle has studied his character movies, and his second film, in Japanese and English, is a crowning achievement in American Indie filmmaking: Indie-Tora-san. Each character, from the unlikable "Jimmy", the genius boy who learns things his own way "Bob", the strictly Japanese-old school older brother-in-law "Tak", and the sister who cares because of blood, "Aiko". After watching, it made me want to watch more. What will Jimmy do next? Stay in Montana with dinosaurs? Go back to Salt Lake City? Back to Japan? Who knows? I want to.
