Review of White Oleander (2002) by Francis M — 29 May 2010
What easily could have turned into a melodramatic chick flick goes in the completely opposite direction. Instead provided you with a compelling and beautifully put together drama about the relationship between a mother and daughter.
I wish Alison Lohman still showcased her talent as she did in her breakout role in this film. She was sensational and showed us real promise but than she started taking on this underdeveloped role, hopefully that will change eventually.
Michelle Pfeiffer also gives a strong performance and proves she still got it. I really liked how the film flows so well as Astrid travels from home to home with flashbacks to true home life in-between.
Despite the fact that characters come and go each have a profound impact on her life and we see that on her journey in discovering who she is. I wish they were able to include more characters and plot threads from the book.
