Review of White Noise (2005) by Nia S — 31 Mar 2012
The not so wonderful world of TV.
It's not as atmospheric or as well acted as The Ring, but it makes much more sense than The Grudge. It's not an amazing supernatural thriller by any means, but it's better than some of the alternatives.
The Story: Jonathan Rivers receives messages from beyond the grave through electronic equipment. When he starts getting messages from people before they're dead it becomes a race against time to save the troubled souls before it's too late. It moves decently, and has a sleek silver style to it, but it's poor story development and lack of interesting characters really drags it down. It's a great concept, it's just not a great story.
The Cast: Michael Keaton, Deborah Kara Unger... Keaton is the man talking to the dead. I only have one question for this man, and that is "what were you thinking?". This man was one of the best Batmans to ever grace the silver screen, and now he's this? He doesn't do a poor job here, but he really doesn't do a great job either. Not his most convincing role to date. Deborah Kara Unger, is his friend, she knows all about talking to the dead and receiving messages. Her character doesn't really serve much of a purpose here. She is attractive, but they're not using her as an object for sex appeal, and her character doesn't really do too much to enhance the story. She's appeared in better roles as well.
One To Five Scale: 3.
It's got some cool effects, and a couple of good scares here and there. If the story was a little more thought out and the characters a little more intriguing it could have been a little more than just average.
Tyler.
