Review of White Material (2010) by Ryan B — 23 Jun 2010
Claire Denis is a genius; by far one of the most talented filmmakers working today. Resembling Haneke, White Material is not for the passive viewer as it hints and provokes without providing clear cut answers and instead forces the viewer to be an active participant.
I love films like this, where your mind is fully engaged and the images presented are open for interpretation. This is not a typical "Africa" film but is instead a voluptuous indictment on power and loyalty.
Huppert gives a fantastic performance but it is really Denis who shines here, creating a world wholly her own. There are few filmmakers who I admire more than Claire Denis.
