Review of White Material (2010) by Mike V — 27 Nov 2010
This movie sets an ominous tone from the very beginning, and this is at times a difficult film to watch. The insanity of a world in which machete-toting child soldiers go on rampages is the backdrop against which the insanity of the Isabel Huppert character's own delusions are depicted.
Maybe it is being suggested in this movie that insanity is contagious. It is a movie that raises questions about what a breakdown in "civilization" really means when a plantation owner thinks nothing of living in air conditioned luxury while the people she hires live in cramped and unpleasant quarters.
In any case, watching this movie, I felt drawn into the brutal reality of an unnamed African nation in the midst of a nasty civil war. It is not exactly a fun movie to watch, but I did find it riveting.
