Review of White Material (2010) by Nick D — 28 Nov 2010
This is the elliptically told story of a white woman owner of a coffee plantation in AFrica amidst revolution. Isabelle Huppert is excellent as the fierce, often deluded woman who somehow believes that her birthright and intense commitment to the land and the people she hires should be enough to protect her from the forces of anti-colonialism and the terror unleashed as factions of natives vie for control.
What makes the movie more than just another tale of colonialism a la Conrad, or even Coppola, is the strange, dreamlike behavior of so many of the characters. Shifting loyalties, perhaps insanity, savagery and bad timing all play a role in a really creepy conclusion.
Not for everyone, but I liked it a lot.
