Having seen a slew of solid foreign films recently --- this was a huge letdown!
Isabelle Huppert is the totally unfathomable lead in this film playing a woman who runs a coffee plantation in a nameless African country that is in the midst of violent civil war. The French Army departs and beg her to leave. All of her local contacts in town tell her to get out while she can. All of her workers abandon her and her son is drug-addicted wannabe Nazi skin-head who likes stirring up trouble. The fact that her character blindly stays in the face of all this life-threatening adversity is not a rich and thrilling account of a woman driven to the edge (as the ad reads) but a woman who is completely oblivious to everything around her.
Brutal, violent and pointless. This is not "Out Of Africa".
