Review of White Heat (1949) by Greg O — 07 Jul 2008
This is an incredible film, and one of the best mobster films ever. Although Cagney figured this was just another typical gangster movie and even grew to dislike it later in life, his performance as the psychotic, mother-obsessed Cody Jarrett is a marvel to watch.
The standout scenes to me are the prison meal scene where he learns of his mother's death and explodes in rage and grief, the scene where he "ventilates" the trunk of a car holding a cohort within, and the explosive finale.
A film not to be missed. "Made it, Ma! Top of the world!".
