Review of White Heat (1949) by Steve G — 12 Mar 2011
Whoa! I had no idea what to expect, save for the iconic last words. Let me be clear: This is the greatest crime drama I have EVER seen. This film is a masterpiece & a breakthrough. It was the archetype & paved the way for every single crime movie that came after.
Cagney has never been more convincing. One of the quintessential representations of the mama's boy pathology. An early anomaly where the antagonist is the lead & the protagonist is a supporting role. The interplay between Cagney & the undercover officer was so interesting to watch. His relationship with his wife was always real, but not in a pretentious, gratuitous, new hollywood way.
I was expecting just your average Warner crime caper. I can't begin to say how much this exceeded expectations. The screenplay was absolutely brilliant. One of the greatest film experiences of my life! For all intents & purposes, a darn near flawless film.
