Review of White Heat (1949) by Tanya L — 20 Jul 2009
James Cagney is one of those actors whom I've heard about from time to time and who only gets the highest praises. So, when my aunt showed me a video of White Heat, I wanted to see it.
Technically the video was not in great condition. But all that I had heard about Cagney was true. He is an amazing presence on the screen. A terrific actor. He had such cockiness.
The story of a criminal, who has a major complex about his mother, and who escapes from prison to lead his old gang in a heist, is well directed by Raoul Walsh.
Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts wrote the screenplay as though they had Cagney in mind for the role. It was a perfect vehicle for him.
