Review of White Dog (1982) by Biff M — 03 Dec 2008
I can only approach this movie from the point of view of allegory. Taken on a literal level it's remarkably implausible... oh, not the premise which is repulsively believable... but the actions of the characters.
But if you accept that the characters exist in this movie's world to illustrate certain truths and you concentrate on the way director Samuel Fuller shoots much of the movie from the point of view of the dog.
.. inviting us to to react with and then against the dog as a character... the movie takes on a whole other dimension that links it (in my mind) with of all things Robert Bresson's "Au hasard Balthazar.
" The parallel between the two movies is striking.
