Review of White Boy Rick (2018) by Nick S — 18 Sep 2018
Not even Matthew Mcconaughey's acting chops could bring depth to this undeveloped main character. The dialogue is pretty hard to follow because of the weird, fake Michigan accents. The pacing is just off.
The motivation to sell drugs being the fact that his sister is a drug addict who will live with the person she sees as best able to take care of her, it paints an unrealistic portrait of addiction. Namely, that enough money will fix it.
The movie does do a good job of showing us the bleariness of an unending Michigan winter, and the economic hardships it symbolizes. Plotwise, it glosses over the true story; the FBI exploiting young urban people in the 1980's.
Putting their lives in danger in order to "catch bigger fish". It instead chooses to focus on one of the victims of Reagan's war on poverty, who's story arc ending is unsatisfying to say the least.
