Review of White Boy Rick (2018) by Darcy E — 16 Sep 2018
The movie offers a compelling look at life and family in inner-city Detroit in the 1980s where hope and dreams are smothered by reality. The film could depict 2018 in Chicago, Baltimore, LA, or any other city that is highly segregated in terms of prosperity.
Richie Merritt, a novice actor, convincingly plays Rick Wershe, Jr., a real-life kid who was doomed from childhood, and Matthew McConaughey offers a riveting performance as his father, trying to make ends meet by selling gun to raise enough money to open a small video store, the emerging technology of the day. In the end, it's all about holding a family together under the worst temptations the inner-city has to offer. If you liked Moonlight, Blindsiding and BlackkKlansmen, this is a film for you.
