Review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) by Roxanne R — 30 Jun 2016
I really like Tina Fey, she is a fantastic comedy actress but the subject matter of this particular film with its "dark humor" compels the viewer especially if you are in the military to look at it from a different perspective.
I found more seriousness than laughs, more darkness and misery. This is the profound story of a woman's self discovery; a journalist named Kim Barker (Tina Fey) who spent years as a reporter in Afghanistan and Pakistan starting in 2002.
As a woman in a male oriented society and culture you can imagine her task as reporter was more challenging for her than her male counterparts. The film is based on Barker's memoir "The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan".
An interesting cast especially Martin Freeman as Iain MacKelpie, Billy Bob Thornton as General Hollanek and Alfred Molina as Ali Massoud Sadiq. I concur with Michael Smith from MediaMikes who said: "Well-made and much more serious than it's being marketed, "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" gives Tina Fey the chance to flex some acting chops you may not know she possessed.
" For all the military personnel that had to do tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and nearby places I know it was not fun and hilarious and chances are you were risking your lives daily to eradicate terrorism.
I will say I feel neutral about this one but you are welcome to check it out if you desire.
