Review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) by Aimee H — 15 Mar 2016
Thanks to a game face BFF like Tina Fey, you won't want to go AWOL from slight war comedy WTF once you're there, but there's not enough LOL or W00t! to really earn your presence in the first place. Tackling some deathly serious subjects with a restrained worldview pretty much negates the purpose of taking an R-rated humorous look at the war in Afghanistan. The condom's off so why just go to second base and safely retreat home? That's exactly what WTF does, however, raising very topical issues like female oppression and then backing away as if to say that bringing it up at all equals out-and-out ballsiness.
In this R-rated comedy based on The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker, a journalist (Fey) recounts her wartime coverage in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The memoir part of the movie achieves slightly more, if only because Fey casts off any thought of sketch comedy in the form of SNL or situational comedy in the form of 30 Rock in her committed portrayal of Barker, a journalist "finding" herself amid finding herself in a controversial war zone. Martin Freeman likewise earns his stripes for NOT playing a variation on the same character he's played in everything from the BBC's Sherlock to The Hobbit series to FX's Fargo.
Bottom line: The Skirt Locker.
