Review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) by Jess_Hill — 13 May 2016
Based on a true story, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and unique film, which chronicles the experiences of reporting from a war zone in a clever, insightful, and occasionally funny way. Fey is exceptional, and the performances are fantastic.
The script is excellent, and the soundtrack is awesome. The pacing could have been a little faster, but it doesn't drag, and the cinematography is solid. The storyline is engaging and offers us a more nuanced commentary on the conflict in Afghanistan than other recent films, whilst avoiding cliches and sentimental 'Murica tropes, instead exploring a realistic and unabashed commentary on being a female correspondent in an exceptionallly hostile setting.
Well worth your time. 8.
