Review of Whiplash (2014) by Amie C — 31 May 2015
Whiplash is an embodiment of passion, anger and desperation in young adults. The relationship between Andrew Neyman and Terence Fletcher is complex, unhealthy and yet completely relatable. Despite Fletcher's barbaric methods and intimidating presence, Neyman is keen for his approval and goes to great lengths to prove himself, which doesn't always go in his favour.
Whiplash details the dying presence of both Jazz and compassion in today's America. Featuring a brilliant score and innovative cinematography - my favourite shot features Neymen's hand entering a jug of ice water, and the blood slowly begins to engulf the water and Neyman's arm.
Whiplash is inspiring and exhilarating, featuring a satisfying climax that will leave you wanting an encore.
