Review of Whiplash (2014) by Chris W — 15 Jul 2015
The movie that history will remember from the Oscar Class of 2014. Fiercely original in tone, story and direction, Chazelle directs Whiplash with a refreshing flair and panache without losing his audience in a frenzy of style over storytelling.
All the plaudits (deservedly) went to Simmons who knocks it out of the park, but it was Teller who took his role to unexpected places and was every inch a match for his co-star. Whiplash proves you don't need car chases, global catastrophes or rampaging zombies to create a riveting and intense cinema experience.
You can achieve it simply with a great story, engaging characters, actors at the top of their game and an eye for originality. Bravo.
