Review of Whiplash (2014) by Joshua M — 04 Oct 2015
A lot of the praise for this movie, rightfully so, has been foisted upon JK Simmons for his blood-curdling portrayal of Terrance Fletcher. However, for my money, the evolution of Miles Teller over the course of this film deserves a little more attention than has been afforded to him at this point.
The fact that all that drumming (and most of the bleeding) was 100% real represents dedication to craft not often seen. Too bad he followed this one up with two awful franchise films that tanked. His star still has a little more rising to do, but a few more movies like this and he'll enter the kinds of conversations that the likes of Brolin, Bridges, Keaton and, as it happens, Simmons are already a part of.
