Review of Whiplash (2014) by Lukas W — 13 Apr 2016
Whiplash is a very peculiar type of film in that by the time the credits roll you might find yourself laughing about how unexpectedly great it all was. A film about endurance and craft, director/writer Damien Chazelle has made one of the most intense music-based films ever, and the amount of bloodshed in it is certain to shock viewers who thought they were seeing a film merely about band-practice.
It's all well earned though, as the director shoots the film with a razor-sharp edge, and his script is universally taut, making vital use of every moment of the running time up to the powerful ending.
Lastly, the two leads both give best-yet performances, most satisfyingly from J.K. Simmons, as here the venerable character actor finally gives us the unforgettable performance that we've probably been waiting to see for nearly two decades now.
As awe-inspiring as it is brutal, Damien Chazelle has made a masterful sophomore picture that truly needs to be seen to be believed.
