Review of Whiplash (2014) by Lee A — 10 Nov 2016
As one critic put it, this movie demolishes the musical-prodigy film cliches. This story about a drummer was more intense than most sports flicks or war movies I've seen. Plus the music was great, somewhere in there there was a poster that said "those who can't play music join a rock band.
" It doesn't condone the psychological abuse that occurs but it definitely makes for some good, deep conversations. I really liked the point one of the characters made when they said "Good Job!" is probably the worst thing anyone could ever say to someone, bashing on the celebration of mediocrity.
Obtaining mastery in anything requires blood, sweat, and tears, and too often we're happy with settling for something less. We need people to push us to become more than we think we can be, but to what degree is it healthy and productive? Filtering out the language made for an interesting experience as there was a lot of yelling profanities throughout it, but I don't think it took much away, if anything.
It was great even with VidAngel.
