"The Road to Greatness Can Take You to the Edge." Without a doubt Whiplash takes you to the edge of a musicians desperation for greatness. All greatness requires sacrifice... but what if you want to be THE greatest? Would you let go of everything precious to you (including yourself) just so that strangers will remember your name? I wouldn't, but it makes for an intense and powerful movie.
