A powerful tale of ambition, Whiplash delivers heart, and is far more intense than any run of the mill action flick. JK Simmons steels the show, giving a performance very reminiscent of the drill Sargent from Full Metal Jacket.
In fact, this film at times is every bit as intense as Full Metal Jacket. The best part though is how it displays that even the most brutal if people are still people. Fletcher (Simmons) isn't just some asshole, the film displays how his goal is to push his students to reach their potential.
What's more motivating, someone telling you that you can do it, or the someone saying you're a worthless piece of shit who will never amount to anything? You want to prove that person wrong, you want to be king.
