Review of Whiplash (2014) by Johnny T — 03 Jun 2015
Definitely one of my favorite nor an Oscar contender this year. Not just a musical film but also one of the best psychological films I've seen for awhile. I'm a musician myself and I can relate to it.
Somebody just shaken me up to watch this film and I thought to myself, this is just another musical film that has good cinematography and all kinds of musical stuffs. But I've proven myself wrong.
It is one of those films that is beautifully written, has wonderful performances, and sometimes it is a nail biter when tension heats up. Every musical performance, every live performance, the sound of those jazz music, it is just dazzling to watch.
J.K Simmons as Terence Fletcher, I mean, my God, how good this guy is. He performs as a musical instructor and he is such a bad ass with it. I mean he reminds me of my teacher before with that kind of attitude.
He is such a perfectionist that he wants his tempo and sound satisfying. And dude, Miles Teller as Neyman, this guy nails every performance. Like he feels for his character, the need and the sacrifice of being a great musician.
I saw him act and to tell you honestly, he was good in that film "The Spectacular Now" thus he is great in this film. This film surprised a lot of critics. You never saw it coming from a director and screenwriter who is just starting to shine.
Remember Damien Chazelle everybody. Hope to see more from him. This is one of those films that has brilliant performances, acting wise it is just beyond expectations. Definitely a must watch. Perfect 5 stars!
