Review of Whiplash (2014) by Alex A — 12 Jun 2015
Only a special film can pull off through-the-roof intensity from such a modest premise. The performances in Whiplash are unbelievably natural from Miles Teller and especially from J.K. Simmons who channels R.
Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket. Damien Chazelle's script is deliciously dense, witty, and briskly paced, the cinematography embodies the unreal amount of tension, and it even adds emotional layers that everyone can relate too.
The climax is spectacular and for a film about jazz, Whiplash is rockin', and then some.
