It's so easy to see why J. K. Simmons won his Oscar in this movie. He has this scary, intensity about him throughout the whole movie - and at some points he just looks pure evil. The whole film is tight, exciting, fresh and new.
You just wonder all the time how far these two people can push each other and whether they are actually reaching new pinnacles of artistry to depths of self-abuse. It's all so emotionally relentless that even the audience gets whiplash.
