Intense to the point of being uncomfortable. That is one of Whiplash's strongest points, and it knows it. The film follows a rising drum student who is taken under the wing of a hellish instructor.

This film could have very easily fallen to pieces if it wasn't for the fantastic J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller. We get a side to each of these actors that we haven't seen before, and this is easily Simmons' greatest performance.

The film moves pretty briskly, only dragging during the unnecessary relationship drama scenes. And as was previously mentioned, the intensity of the film is certainly a high point for the film. Many scenes that show our actors being tested to their limits tend to test ours, but in a way that pays off.

These scenes have slow building tension that creeps over the viewer and starts to make them feel uneasy. All of this comes together for a finale that will keep you on edge. Whiplash is a film that never should have worked, but it does, and it is great.
