Review of Whiplash (2014) by Dana F — 24 Oct 2015
Man, I REALLY loved this one. This movie is entirely performance driven, and what performances they are. JK Simmons is getting most of the recognition for his performance as an abusive teacher, but it wouldn't be nearly as remarkable if it weren't for Miles Teller's equally amazing performance as an ultra-ambitious drum prodigy.
He's the yin to Simmons' yang, it's too bad only one of them is getting the credit when the success of this film rests so clearly on both of their shoulders. The film is also well-written, well-paced, and extremely gripping, to the point that I was physically tense through most of it and it took me awhile to decompress after it was over.
I can see why this was an indie-darling and I'm glad it got the recognition it deserves at the Oscars. Of all the nominees, this has affected me the most and sat with me the longest. .
