Review of Whiplash (2014) by Jason M — 05 Feb 2016
This is an awesome film! I have recommended it to others as a great time. It has the best verbal abuse committed to film!
It's impressive to see the dedication and passion of a true jazz musician. Nothing else matters. Money doesn't matter. It's almost as if they have taken a vow of poverty, like a priest, to worship the music they love. It is this subject matter that this film so strongly exudes.
Passionate musicians are prepared to do whatever it takes to be the best. This does not mean fortune and fame. It means perfecting their craft and being satisfied that they have pushed themselves to achieving as much talent as they are capable to hone.
This is cinema. However, watch Beware Mr. Baker for the real life jazz drummer syndrome. It is a great documentary on drummer Ginger Baker, clearly underrated and arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time. Yes, much better than even Keith Moon and John Bonham. Watch the film and you will understand.
