Review of Whip It (2009) by Mitchell B — 10 Jun 2011
Wow! I've never seen a film try soooo hard to manufacture indie cred and fall so short. The halting, stilted direction proves that Barrymore is far better in front of the camera behind it. You know you have a problem when you have the immensely talented Kristen Wiig delivering lines as woodenly as acting part-timers Zoe Bell and Eve.
Tonally Whip It wants desperately to be another Juno or Garden State but never steps out of the shadows of its obvious influences. In the end the outtakes over the credits seem far more genuine and interesting than the preceding hour and 45 minutes.
