Review of Whip It (2009) by Elise B — 11 Apr 2012
Wow, this was a bit of a shock. Even though from the very beginning there are several well known clichà (C)d or well known plot lines, it is written in a considerate manner, allowing it to feel more natural and welcoming. The storylines of an overbearing parent, an unassuming protagonist who grows as a character, etc, etc. However, the script is solid, and weaves these clichà (C)s into the story in a much better manner then expected, which really impressed.
What also impressed me was Drew Barrymoreâ(TM)s magnificent direction, if not for the fact I already knew, I would have thought it was a film veteran of several movies in the past. She was solid, and got some magnificent shots, and I hope the fact that the film barely broke even wonâ(TM)t put her off, she got great acclaim for her direction.
Ellen Page was a good lead, whilst she was slightly disappointing in Inception, I remember being very impressed by Juno, and she is more along the Juno lines in terms of impressing me, she was solid, grew in character in a believable manner, and by the end of the film was very strong and impressive.
The film was solid, good, and will be held up as wonderful debut by Drew Barrymore over the next few decades, should be seen.
