Review of Whip It (2009) by Kelly E — 03 Sep 2010
I honestly didn't know what to expect from Drew Barrymore's directorial debut Whip It but I can tell you it was insanely entertaining and a blast to watch and she has done everything right, right down to correctly showing the roller derby matches were attended by a few hundred fans in some warehouse, not thousands in an arena.
Plot: The story of a young person (Ellen Page) wanting to follow her heart and join a new sport (roller derby) she has developed a liking for, while her mom wants her to do something completely different. Ellen Page was a delight, as always to watch. The over-protective mother is played by Marcia Gay Harden, who disapproves of her daughter's choice of extracurricular activity.
We?ve also got Juliette Lewis as the bad a$$ woman from the opposite team, Jimmy Fallon as the master of ceremonies at the skating events and a sensational performance by Daniel Stern as Page's Dad.
Whip It is a movie that's genuine and heartfelt?not to mention well-acted and downright hilarious. It has a bit of girl-power and a bit of the can-do spirit. If you crave a dose of excitement, then give Whip It a try. Whip it good!!
