Review of Whip It (2009) by Chewith I — 27 Jan 2011
Ok. First off, I need to confess something. I have an unhealthy attraction to Alia Shawkat. I don't mean unhealthy as in I have hair dolls of her or that I follow her around (that would totally be weird...). I mean unhealthy in the way that when I see her on screen my brain turns into mush and my heart begins to flutter, even though I don't even know who she is. For that reason alone, I can watch this movie again and again. Bear that in mind when reading this review.
This movie is great for all the right reasons. Its empowering, uplifting, warm, funny, and real. I couldn't really relate to it as much as other people, maybe because I was never a teenage girl, but it sure was fun. Marcia Gay Harden did an excellent job and was, in my opinion (excluding Alia Shawkat), the best part of the movie. I got a bit teary, but didn't cry, even though I'm a big cry baby. I like this movie, and I think you would too. If anything else, its full of beautiful women beating up on each other.
