Review of Whip It (2009) by Keith T — 10 Feb 2011
Wasn't overly enthused watching this as I find Drew Barrymore's involvement in anything generally a taint of evil. She even manages to ruin a couple of scenes in the otherwise brilliant Donnie Darko with a horrendous performance. Grudgingly though, I have to say she's done a good job here.
It's a chick flick through and through, and the story arc is hugely predictable right from the get-go, but the performances inject the whole thing with enough fun to make it an enjoyable watch. Even Barrymore turns in some good comic moments, and the direction is competent enough (although the actual roller derby scenes could do with a bit more pizazz and drama).
As mentioned, it's most certainly aimed at the ladies, but it's got enough wit to put it in a different class to patronizing irredeemable braindead tripe like the Sex&The City movies. Whether you're a guy or a girl, you could do a lot worse than this fun and likable movie.
