Drew Barrymore shows that she has a future in directing with this energetic story about the shy girl who overcomes her insecurities by becoming a roller derby sensation. The young adult caliber plot is awfully familiar, but the whole just works surprisingly well.
I usually can't stand these "A Young Protagonist Grows as a Pereson!"-movies, but Barrymore gives the presentation a unique edge. And as brilliant Ellen Page leads the show with yet another amazing performance, the movie reaches an honesty and authenticity that is a joy to behold.
