Review of Whip It (2009) by Dave L — 24 Apr 2011
I really enjoyed this. Barrymore's directorial debut is a great first effort and I look forward to her next offering. The delectable Ellen Page plays Bliss, a 17yr old who is fed up with being made by her mother to enter beauty pageants and additionally the small town she lives in. Bliss secretly discovers Roller Derby, an outlet for her teenage angst and a set of surroundings that she doesn't have to unwillingly confirm to.
There are no real surprises here, there's ultimately there's an emotional showdown with her mother that plays out as you'd expect and the romantic sub plot feels slightly cliched. None of this however, detracts from what is a really entertaining and enjoyable film. The matches at the roller derby are great to watch too.
