Review of Whip It (2009) by Shawn C — 14 Oct 2011
Director Drew Barrymore throws you for a loop, making Whip It something fresh instead of the norm. There's also a somewhat fundamental gender shift, not all gals want to follow in their mom's footsteps or have an office job, some just simply want to kick ass.
This idea is further explored when Ellen Page furiously accuses her own mother of foisting her idea of 1950s womanhood on her seventeen year old daughter. Whip It is humorous, dramatic, and fun. Also, it isn't plagued with any glaring cliches either.
In the future, I hope Drew just stays behind the camera from now on, instead of in front of one!
