Review of Whip It (2009) by Nadja A — 24 Dec 2011
3/5.
Going into this, I had high hopes for this due to some good reviews and I always liked Ellen Page and after I finished this, I must say Whip It has it's moments but lacks a lot of things.
Whip It is about a girl who lives a typical high school life. Her life changes when she finds roller derby which leads to fun and also trouble.
Ellen Page does put a good perfomece together and it really helps the film. The roller derby scenes are pretty cool and shot real well. It also pretty interesting seeing girls kick and punch. Daniel Stern is also pretty cool in this.
A pretty cool thing about this film was that it was shot five minutes away from my house and I used to go to that roller skating rink all the time. So it was pretty cool watching big actors making a film there knowing I was there a long ago.
Even though Daniel Stern is cool, he has a lot of unfunny jokes. The main problem of this is the originality of the film. We've all this seen this before. We seen high school kids sneaking out, we've seen losers become winners and we've seen these boyfriend and girlfriend troubles before.
Whip It would not be good as it is if is wasn't for Ellen Page but Drew Barrymore still has long way to go to as a director.
