Review of Whip It (2009) by Bob S — 21 Apr 2012
Page stars as, Bliss, a 17-year-old girl desperate to express herself in new ways and head in a direction different than what her mother (played by Harden) has in mind. However, even Bliss would never have guessed that her rebellion would have led to roller derby.
The story is a great reminder of how many of us search for what brings us the greatest joy and that one should do what they can to pursue those opportunities when they come their way. There is a pretty solid supporting cast including Barrymore (the director), Wiig, Lewis and Shawkat.
The filmâ??s main problem is that the story was formulaic with the typical teenage girl themes â?? defy parents, date bad boy, fight with best friend, etc. It is an enjoyable film, but one that will seem familiar despite efforts to disguise itself as a fresh concept.
