Review of Whip It (2009) by Meredith W — 08 Dec 2012
Ellen Page will always be Juno to me and this movie, though entertaining and fun, is no Juno. Even so, the characters, most so interesting and well developed that they seemed authentic. Bliss, is willful and determined, yet not so haughty that she only seems like a spoiled brat.
I also like that it portraits a strong female character with choices, decisions being made and its consequences, then seeing the character learning from her mistakes. It is predictable at times but it's less about the end result and more about the path taken to get there that makes movies like these work or fail, And the themes along the way are dealt with quite well, particularly the depiction of the struggle between ambitions of children and the plans of their parents.
