Review of While She Was Out (2008) by Marija D — 27 Oct 2009
A below-par thriller.
In the film, Basinger plays wife/mother who is "pushed over the edge" on christmas eve. AFter a caffuffle with some hoodlums at the mall she wind sup in the woods running for her life with only a toolbox full of goodies to survive.
The film has good intentions but has way way too many serious flaws. First of all, the film is played out way too seriously. To be honest I would have prefered it iof the film were more tongue-in-cheek even though it does deal with some touchy subject matter. The pacing/structure is warped and everything either happens to quickly or is dragged out too long. But easily one of tyhe biggest issues with the film is the idioctic, terribly unconvincing and racially stereotyped gang that is supposed to be a threat. It just doesn't work.
It certainly has its charms, but it fails to capture the emotions its looking for and fails to be as brutal as its supposed to be.
