Review of While She Was Out (2008) by Ruby R — 22 May 2009
This one felt like several movies rolled into one. A fairy tale meets a morality feminist piece meets a fast-paced action flick. While I expected some suspense I was taken aback by the gore that popped up in this.
It was a nice little touch and I helped me enjoy it to a sense. Kim Basinger rocked in her role and I admit, I could watch her do this type of role in this type of movie all day. It's not often you see a Hollywood starlet play a hunter in a low-budget and graphic movie like this! Her chemistry with Craig Sheffer was another highlight as the two played off each other very well.
Susan Montford gave the movie a very quick pace, made the woods creepy and had tension laced throughout. Well done. This one had the opportunity to go many bold places. Alas, it didn't and took the typical routes when it comes to movies like these.
The same could be said for the ending which just left me blank. The "bad guys" in this are really lame here and came across as a bunch of little pussies with their baby talk. They had me LOL-ing a couple of times with their putrid lines and Basinger could have taken them out in frame one.
Lastly, I wasn't sure exactly as to what kind of point this movie was trying to make. Was it a satire? A flat out action/horror opus? A feminist piece? Not getting what it was all "about" made it feel disjointed and confused in places as to how I should react.
But this is an easy, fast-paced, amusing and at times surprising ride. The plot twists, baddies and lines sucked balls but if you don't let that bug you too much, you might have fun with it too. You can do much worse than this one.
