Review of Where the Wild Things Are (2009) by Jonny P — 25 Nov 2012
This is an imaginative envisioning of Maurice Sendak's beloved classic children's picture story book, famed for its incredible artwork more so than narrative. Spike Jonze scratches the surface of potential here, spectacularly bringing the Wild Things to life, and perhaps not really allowing his imagination to stretch as far as it could, considering the source material's limited text.
The film is actually at its best in the first act, where the charming and captivating young Max Records, as protagonist Max, is the sole centre of attention, conveying a variety of emotions and dramatic range that the rest of the film simply cannot match.
