Review of Where the Wild Things Are (2009) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
Where the Wild Things Are takes a while to process. You really have to get in the mind of Max to appreciate its innocence and symbolism. When you do, you're captured in it imagination. Yet I still didn't leap out of the theater in amazement.
Visually it's incredible and one of the most imaginative looking films I've ever seen. Spike Jonze directing style floors me. The cinematography is astounding. The point being: this is movie is amazingly well photographed.
Its the character relationships that were jarring. Not sure who to trust, who to love, who to be afraid of. The things, they are wild. Looking back on Jonze other film achievements like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation; I wasn't immediately taken by them either, but have learned to adore them.
Anyone with a taste for art in cinema will probably dig this especially if you shop at Urban Outfitters. It's a movie for hipsters and pop culture fanatics. The rest of the world will probably be bored and detached from their imaginations.
