Review of Where the Wild Things Are (2009) by Anthony D — 17 Dec 2011
I was expecting a children's movie, but what I saw was a film for teens and adults about a vividly imaginative child questioning his place in life. For the first 20 minutes, it felt like it was going to be another "Little Miss Sunshine" -- a high-quality indie film about how a dysfunctional family survives.
Then the wild rumpus began, and all I could think was, "this is weird!" Weird isn't a bad thing, and I love a movie that can surprise me, but I just wasn't prepared at all. I have to give Sendak and Jonze credit for that.
