Review of Where the Wild Things Are (1975) by Chantal B — 02 Aug 2013
Not a movie for children, but about children. Perhaps one of the greatest films I have ever seen. To risk being mauled by a robust cliche, it is poetry in motion, or perhaps, emotion. I can only hope it will be one of those movies whose brilliance is realized when audiences finally catch up with it.
(Sorry to sound patronizing, not the intent. I mean only that people still expect kid movies to exist on a lower intellectual plane, and don't like it when a story with characters looking like this dives as deep as it does.
) So will kids love it? I don't know. Kid by kid basis, I suppose. But this is an arthouse fairy tale film, and fully does the book, and its darker tones, justice. More than you can say for what Hollywood does to every other churned out adaption.
Wild times at 24fps. Beware the Carol.
