Review of Where the Wild Things Are (1975) by Erik B — 12 Oct 2013
This is not a kid's movie, but it's a movie ABOUT kids. There's a painful, dark subtext here that isn't easy to pinpoint, but is undoubtedly looming throughout every frame of this film just as the pain of life runs throughout the times of childhood.
You wouldn't remember it as well, but you were probably lonely, frightened and wide eyed to fun as a child. You didn't understand the complex situations of the world around you, but you DID deal with it.
This is the power of imagination, and this is what fuels the "wild things". Jonze has created a marvel of a film, fueled by reckless imagination against dealing with the worst times of being a child.
It's a remarkable feat. The most criminally underrated film about childhood ever created.
